Abstract (english) The importance of oral health cannot be overstated, as it is a vital component of overall well-being and understanding its significance is crucial in maintaining good general health. Health complications in the mouth can have a significant impact on one's overall health and, if left untreated, can lead to various difficulties not only in the oral cavity but also throughout the body. Similarly, numerous systemic illnesses and conditions have the potential to manifest themselves in the mouth, worsening overall oral health problems.
Maintaining good oral health is not only important for a healthy and attractive smile, but it can also have a significant impact on overall health. Periodontal diseases, in particular, are linked to various systemic illnesses and can have adverse effects on them. Bacteria that cause periodontal diseases can enter the bloodstream and contribute to the buildup of plaque in arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Additionally, patients with diabetes may experience dry mouth, which increases the risk of tooth decay. High blood sugar levels can also cause gum inflammation, leading to gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which can result in tooth loss. On the other hand, periodontitis can have a detrimental effect on glycemic control in diabetic patients. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also affect oral health. Increased hormone levels and inadequate oral hygiene can lead to pregnancy gingivitis. The presence of periodontitis in mothers, coupled with the influence of progesterone and estrogen on periodontal tissues, can cause premature labor or other complications during pregnancy.
Undoubtedly, the connection between oral health and overall health is an inseparable entity. Thus, it is crucial to uphold proper oral hygiene practices and regularly seek professional dental care to ensure good oral health, which in turn contributes to overall well-being.
